Yes — gas fire pits produce no embers and very little smoke, so they're approved for most covered patios as long as you maintain the manufacturer's overhead clearance (usually 8 to 10 feet to combustibles). Always check the specific clearance spec in the fire pit's manual.

What's the difference between propane and natural gas fire pits?

Propane runs on a portable LP tank — move the fire pit anywhere, refill as needed. Natural gas connects directly to your home's gas line — no tanks, no running out, but you'll need a plumber for the line. Most makers (Prism, Outdoor Plus, Ohio Flame) offer both fuel types on the same model.

Do I need a permit for a fire pit?

Free-standing fire pits typically don't need a permit, but built-in gas fire pits do — the gas line connection and the structure both fall under your local building code. What's the best material for an outdoor fire pit?

For longevity, Corten (weathering) steel develops a stable rust patina and lasts 20+ years outdoors. GFRC concrete (Prism, Outdoor Plus) is sculptural and freeze-thaw stable.
